CERAMIC TILE – WHAT IS IT?

When choosing a house design, it is worth thinking carefully about the roofing. Many architects recommend ceramic tiles for the roof, because it is one of the most durable materials available on the market.

Ceramic tiles are made of clay, quartz sand, brick powder with added pigment. Tiles of specific shapes or dimensions are formed from this mixture. Then they are dried and baked at the right temperature. There are three types of surface finish:

  • natural
  • engobe
  • glazed

Each type of ceramic roof tiles has similar properties and parameters:

  • resistance to various weather conditions;
  • low water absorption – below 5%;
  • non-flammable;
  • great thermal and sound insulation;
  • lasting for at least half a century.

Ceramic tiles are recommended for roofs with an angle of inclination greater than 30°. Thanks to this, it will effectively drain the rainwater.

TYPES OF CERAMIC TILES

Currently, ceramic tiles are available in various colors and shapes. Consequently, it can be adapted to almost any type of roof. The most popular kinds are:

Flat ceramic tile

It has a flat surface, large size and minimalist design. It is mainly used in modern construction. It can be laid using the traditional method or offset by half.

Interlocking tile

They have a large format, a flat surface and grooved tabs on the top and bottom edges. They ensure better tightness of the cover. This type of tiles should overlap with each other. This will make the roof more airtight. They are best suited to roofs with a medium slope. The most popular interlocking roof tiles are: Roman, Romanesque and marseille tiles.

Fish Scale ceramic tile

It has a small size with a flat surface and a rounded flat edge. They are perfect for covering roofs with unusual shapes. It is one of the heaviest kinds of clay tiles.

Corrugated tile

They are characterized by a rounded profile. Roof tiles of ancient origin. A top tile is placed on the lower one, both of which are attached to the battens with clamps and wires. This type of roofing is very laborious and expensive to mount.

Dutch tile (S-tile)

Their cross-section resembles the shape of the letter S. They are always laid from the right side. They ensure good drainage of rainwater.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF CERAMIC TILES

Ceramic tile, like any other material, has many advantages and disadvantages. The main advantages of this solution are:

  • timeless style;
  • durability (guarantee for half a century);
  • resistance to changing weather conditions;
  • low water absorption max. 8%;
  • excellent thermal and acoustic insulation;
  • the natural origin of the material.

Ceramic tile, despite a number of advantages, also has disadvantages. The biggest of them is the high price (it is one of the more expensive roofing materials). This material is heavy, so it requires a stronger truss (which is more expensive). Ceramic tile requires experience and knowledge necessary for proper installation on the roof.

PRICES

The price of a ceramic tile depends on its shape and size of the roof. Fish scales tiles are the cheapest, and Dutch and flat tiles are the most expensive. The cost of covering the roof with ceramic tiles increases due to the necessary finishing elements, e.g. ridge tiles and edge tiles. The price of a ceramic tile is also affected by the size and shape of the roof. One of the more expensive models of roof tiles is by Röben – Piedmont model.

IN WHICH CASES TO CHOOSE A CERAMIC TILE?

Ceramic tile is best suited to cover a gable roof. It can very easily cover a roof with a complicated structure. Ceramic tile is especially recommended for houses with an attic – it retains more heat. Roof covering, e.g. with creaton domino tiles, gives the building a timeless and elegant appearance.

WHAT TO PAY ATTENTION TO WHEN PURCHASING A CERAMIC TILE?

When choosing a ceramic tile, it is worth paying attention to the aesthetics of workmanship and matching the shape of the tile to the roof. If the roof is complex, it is better to cover it with tiles from small elements. If the roof is large, single or gable, then flat tiles, e.g. domino creaton, would be perfect. The color of the ceramic tile is also very important. It is worth choosing a universal color that will match the color of the façade.

Another point is that it is worth considering the warranty period. Some manufacturers offer up to 50 years of warranty on their products. Check whether the warranty covers frost resistance and water absorption.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST COLOR OF A CERAMIC TILE?

In modern buildings, anthracite, graphite or black ceramic tiles are most often used. In houses in the traditional style, red, ginger and brown tiles are most often used.

The color of the roof covering should match the façade and the color of the window and door frames. Sometimes the color of the roof is determined by the local government – this mainly applies to buildings in historic parts of the city.

HOW TO LAY A CERAMIC TILE?

Installing a ceramic metal sheet on a roof requires knowledge and experience. Therefore, the assembly should be entrusted to professionals with several years of experience in laying ceramic metal sheets. The method of installing ceramic tiles is very often specified by the manufacturer – they can be mounted, for example, with clips.

Ceramic tile is a natural material that has been used for centuries to cover roofs. Modern ceramic tiles come in various shapes and colors, so they can be adapted to individual needs.

Dachówka ceramiczna jest naturalnym materiałem używanym od wieków do pokrycia dachów. Współczesne dachówki ceramiczne mają różne kształty i kolory, dzięki temu można je dopasować do indywidualnych potrzeb.
